NAB Hands On

AJA's 4K / HD Camera By Ko Maruyama
NAB Hands On
AJA's 4K / HD Camera

This month, AJA announced a new camera - the RovoCam.  As major producers of video continue to get ready and move forward into higher resolution content, especially UHD, AJA delivers this new block camera for multiple markets and users.

While the RovoCam has applications that can definitely be found within the creative broadcast realm, this block camera can find a useful place in production pipelines outside of Hollywood too.  Whether it's used in corporate, church broadcasting, industrials, or on any fixed reality set - the small camera produces big results.

If you're shooting UHD - which everyone will be soon - the standard 25 and 29.97 frame rates are supported.  If you're able to get away with shooting at a lower resolution, you can push the frame rate to double that speed (50 or 59.94).

Built around a Sony 4K camera, AJA offers a simple delivery of uncompressed video and audio through a single cable to a distance up to 100m (328 ft).  This means that you can mount this block camera a nice distance from control.  The RovoCam can be operated with some third party receivers as well.

Connected to a RovoRx-HDMI unit, all of your video, audio, power, and even control is delivered by a single cable (Cat 5e/6) - Just one cable pull gets you there.

3840 x 2160 is a frame size that will soon become our compositing norm.  A camera like the RovoCam, that brings high quality optics, throughput, and a small price tag, will be something that you'll want to check out at NABShow this April.
