D.A.W.G.S. Hosts Special Guest from Atlanta(September 05, 2013)
Waycross, GA, September 05, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Chelcie Rice, originally from Toccoa, Georgia, is a performing stand-up comedian from Atlanta, Georgia. Rice has lived with Type 1 diabetes for almost 25 years and often incorporates diabetes-themed references into his routine. He got most of his comedic influences from classic comedians like Godfrey Cambridge, Redd Foxx, Don Rickles, Nipsey Russell and Flip Wilson. So, anyone can tell that he definitely appreciates the classic artists. He got his start the typical way, by letting his friends talk him into trying stand-up comedy.
After a couple of years of performing, this former class cut-up has earned the respect of his peers and audiences. He's performed at numerous clubs throughout the Southeast and Midwest. He has performed at the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival in Carborro, NC, The Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival in Asheville, NC and was a headliner at The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival in Austin, TX. He has also participated in several non-profit fund raisers for The American Diabetes Association to help the organization raise funds and awareness, including the Sugar Free Comedy shows.
In 2012 he was selected as one of Diabetes Forecast Magazine's 14 Amazing People to Know. Diabetes Forecast Magazine is published by The American Diabetes Association and is the premier lifestyle magazine for people with diabetes. Rice is the also spokesperson for Advocate Meters (www.advocatemeters.com), makers of quality, talking blood glucose meters. In addition, he is co-host of the Connected Comedy Podcast and creator of the blog How To Suck at Comedy.
For the D.A.W.G.S. presentation, Rice will not be performing an actual comedy routine as he would do in a club, but instead will give more of a keynote speech about his life with diabetes, incorporating humor into his talk. After the presentation, he will also be glad to talk casually and candidly about how he has managed his own diabetes, and will answer questions from attendees to the group or individually.
You can see some video clip examples of Rice’s work online at Youtube and Roof Top Comedy, as well as other sites online. For those viewing clips online or already familiar with his work, Rice has promised to keep his language clean for the D.A.W.G.S. meeting to allow the young residents of the area the opportunity to attend and meet him.
Because of Rice being the spokesman for Advocate Meters, Roberts has arranged to have a quantity of free Advocate Meters for meeting attendees, but only while supplies last. “We will be having some other freebies at the meeting, as well,” said Roberts, “so come on out to join us, hear and meet Chelcie and take something free home with you!”
If you have any questions regarding D.A.W.G.S. meetings or topics, contact the coordinator, Craig Roberts, at 912-283-6086 or email@example.com. You can also visit the group's website at www.livingwellwithdiabetes.org for more information about the group and past and future meetings. Attendees are not required to register and there are no fees for attending. Roberts says, “If you’re free, just show up!”
The purpose of the Diabetes Support Group is to help diabetics realize that they are not alone, to provide education on diabetes prevention, management, and complication issues, and to raise awareness of the disease in the community. This Support Group is not intended to replace or reduce regular visits to the physician of the patient with diabetes. The meetings are intended to help educate the diabetic patients as to management issues, so that they can intelligently discuss the issues with their physician, in order to improve and/or enhance their diabetes management and to gain knowledge of techniques to improve the management skills for which the person has prior authorization from his or her healthcare professional to modify.
D.A.W.G.S. meets at 6:00PM on the first Thursday of each month in the classroom of the Annex building of the Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross at 1800 Alice Street in Waycross, unless otherwise announced.
