Kidpower Co-Sponsors Bye Bye Bullying Student Video Contest With San Francisco DAs Office

October is National Bullying Prevention month and Kidpower, a nonprofit leader in bullying-prevention and confidence-building skills education is partnering with the San Francisco District Attorneys office to co-sponsor a video contest for middle and high school students in San Francisco.

The video contest is called Bye Bye Bullying and the submission period goes from Oct. 3rd to Nov. 7th, 2012.

I feel honored to be part of a community uniting to protect kids from bullying, says Kidpowers founder, Irene van der Zande, speaking at the press conference held by San Franciscos District Attorney George Gascon on Wednesday to offer support for the contest and bullying prevention resources for kids, parents, and teachers. Any of us would feel stressed and miserable if we believed we were helpless and stuck in a situation where others were being deliberately cruel to us."

As the bullying expert advising the DAs sub-committee on bullying, van der Zande talked about the effects of bullying, Being in a frequent state of misery and stress is unhealthy at any age, she said. Research on kids who have been bullied indicate that they are at greater risk of academic problems, health problems, and substance abuse problems.

This video contest by the DA's office is an important way for adults to show young people that bullying is wrong, continued van der Zande. Our goal is to involve young people and adults alike in working together to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and feels safe - and that everyone understands that they are responsible for acting safely and respectfully towards others.

Student videos will be evaluated by a panel of Judges, including van der Zande. Prizes include iPads, sailing lessons, graffiti art classes and much more. Contest winners will be announced on Dec 4th at a press event and winners will have their videos posted on the San Francisco District Attorneys website as well as other websites.
