iPhotonix Debuts Third Party ONTs at the FTTH Conference & Expo 2012.(September 26, 2012)
Richardson, TX (PRWEB) September 26, 2012
The need for increased bandwidth is nothing new for the consumer. The proliferation of wireless devices, including the rapid growth in over-the-top (OTT) video streaming, and other applications, is placing tremendous strain on the network. Nowhere is this strain more evident than at the residence. With a growing number of PCs, gaming consoles, smart phones, tablets and mp3 players, among other devices, the home network is now a bottleneck all its own. Today, its not just a matter of how quickly one can download email, but how quickly one can connect and download content from the site. Everything from streaming audio and video to cloud-based gaming, and the list goes on and on.
This network bottleneck is creating both an opportunity and a challenge for service providers of all sizes. The opportunity exists to attract new customers or up sell existing customers so that they can get the services and speeds they need. However, the challenge is how to expand these in a cost-effective manner. Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) is the perfect solution, but making the business case feasible has been very difficult for some carriers until now.
ADTRAN is stepping up to the plate with an innovative solution and approach to address the FTTH business case. ADTRAN offers a broad portfolio of FTTH solutions and an innovative service management solution - the ADTRAN Operational Environment (AOE). With many customers facing a business case challenge, ADTRAN set out to find a way to solve this problem without sacrificing quality or technology. The solution became clear find a source for third-party ONTs that offers both a price point and features that complement the ADTRAN portfolio and develop a way to manage the entire solution via AOE. That is exactly what ADTRAN did.
The company teamed up with iPhotonix, a pioneer in the design, development and manufacturing of high quality, carrier class, multi-vendor, optical network termination devices. iPhotonix offers the world's broadest independent family of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). Working with iPhotonix, ADTRAN has been able to develop a comprehensive solution utilizing ADTRANs OLTs and existing ONTs, iPhotonix ONTs and ADTRANs AOE to provide customers a complete, fully managed solution with a business case for success.
GPON has always been a closed system, said Jeff Mulqueen, vice president of sales and business development, iPhotonix. That business model has been challenged because no one offers every ONT. Operators requirements can be unique and consumption behavior often changes faster than development cycles can accommodate.
Mulqueen explained that supplying a traditional OEM solution in the past has been strained due to economics. By the time you take the unit and price it so that everyone can get a share of margin, the cost is simply too high, he said. ADTRAN has taken a different approach. ADTRAN took on the task of certifying and supporting complete interoperability with its OLT and management system. Yet, rather than labeling the iPhotonix ONT as an ADTRAN device, adding needless costs to the service provider, these certified ONTs can be purchased directly from distribution. This model is a testament to ADTRANs typical business-enabling model and demonstrates the advantages available by partnering with KGP Logistics for a total end-to-end bundled solution. he said.
ADTRAN OLT + iPhotonix ONT + KGP Logistics services +ADTRAN Management = Winning Business Case
Our approach is making this a win-win for everyone involved, said Craig Goodwin, product manager, FTTH, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. This solution offers service providers a robust management umbrella providing full end-to-end management including integration with billing and auto-provisioning systems at a price point they can afford. iPhotonix gains greater reach through sales and distribution and ADTRAN further expands its FTTH market share.
This solution is quickly catching the attention of service providers in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 space. This approach is drastically different from anything we have seen in the past, said George ONeil, vice-president of network services, GVTC. Fully managed third-party ONT integration will allow service providers to significantly lower the cost of FTTH deployment, providing an improved business case for further service expansion.
Certification is what makes this solution work, said Mulqueen. ADTRAN has made the investment to certify full interoperability with our ONT solutions. This is the best of both worlds for the service provider; they get the features they need from companies they trust with industry-leading service and support all at an affordable price point.
