August is for the Birds - Birdwatchers Flock to Gateway Lodge to Commune with Feathered Friends(August 03, 2012)

The Pied Piper of Birding will swoop in to Gateway Lodge next month to treat avian enthusiasts to a weekend of bird watching in the majestic Cook Forest State Park. Bill Thompson, the editor of Birdwatchers Digest and ardent lover of everything outdoors, will share his comprehensive knowledge of successful bird watching. The weekend package includes two nights in a luxury suite, an early riser continental breakfast on Saturday morning, plated breakfast on Sunday and a guided birding outing with Bill on Saturday.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, August 10 with a wine reception, followed by live music around a campfire (smores included!). Packages include a private balcony with your Luxury Fireside Jacuzzi Suite, a perfect vantage point for all things feathered. Our Gateway Restaurant features farm-to-table fare and a great wine selection in the historic chestnut beamed dining room, and youll have the opportunity to indulge in a relaxing massage or facial at our Gateway's Woods Spa.
Youll learn basic field skills and techniques for enjoyable and successful bird watching. says Bill, This will include an overview of optics, field guides, and basic bird identification. Well then take these skills into the field for some easy birding on the lodge grounds and the old growth cathedral woodland of Cook Forest State Park. Sore of the specialty birds we hope to see include the common merganser, hermit and wood thrush, very, yellow bellied sapsucker and a variety of warblers including chestnut sided, blackburnian, magnolia and black throated green.
Bill Thompson III is the editor of Bird Watcher's Digest by day. He's also a keen birder, the author of many books, a dad, a field trip leader, an ecotourism consultant, a guitar player, the host of the "This Birding Life" podcast, a regular speaker and performer on the birding festival circuit and a gentleman farmer. His North American life list is somewhere between 673 and 675.
Bordered by the wild and scenic Clarion River, Cook Forest State Park is renowned for its virgin white pine and majestic hemlock trees. The forest has garnered the 2009 National Gold Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation.
The Gateway Lodge and Black Bear Cabins are privately owned by Deb Adams, who believes deeply in contributing to her community. The Lodge and Cabins have partnered with multiple area businesses to
offer educational workshops on topics such as nature, art, nutrition and wellness. The Lodge and Cabins also participate in the PA Wilds Artisan Trail by exhibiting works from local artists.
