Where the Air is Rarefied By Ko Maruyama
The title of the documentary DVD is "One Six Right: The Romance of Flying" - it's a love story as told by those with a passion for general aviation.    As the first independent film on HD DVD, the first documentary on HD DVD and the first aviation film on HD DVD, it's a beautiful look at the underrated Van Nuys Airport.

This could be a great gift for dad, or your favorite pilot.  Heck, even someone who has an appreciation for documentary films or history will love this DVD.  And if you think that it's limited to just those audiences - you'd be missing those who will enjoy the glimpse of the airport's Hollywood history that "One Six Right" provides.

I don't notice the sounds of the airport.  I've worked alongside the Van Nuys Airport here in Southern California for several years.  You might assume there are many companies around the airport that focus on those traditional industries (aerospace businesses). You might not know, however,  that several movie studios are also neighbors to this "quaint" airport, working on web, television, and feature film productions.

I'm no fan of commercial flying.

When summer came and the airport would host amazing airplanes for their airshow, we'd take a break from work and walk across the street to watch them land: a preview of the weekend's activities.    These small planes, both historic and experimental are works of art.   There is even beautiful design to be seen in the military aircraft and helicopters that participate in the show.

Until I saw the DVD - the Van Nuys Airport was just "something I drove under to get to lunch".

Although this year (2007) there will be no Van Nuys Airshow (due to construction), you can celebrate the airport, its history and some of the amazing people and aircraft that are associated with the world's busiest general aviation airport.  Taking its name from the numbers on the runway, "One Six Right" is powerful, lithe, and filled with the passion of flight.

Producer/Director Brian J. Terwilliger shot a great documentary which highlights the rich history of the airport.  Shot entirely in high definition, the movie is stunning to look at;  it's absolutely beautiful.  The aerial photography, under the guidance of Kevin N. La Rosa makes you feel like you're actually flying.  Some of the material shot from the A-Star helicopter will make you forget that you're grounded.

Techies will appreciate that the documentary was shot on Panavision and Sony CineAltas (F900 and F950s).  That and the fact that the material was edited in Final Cut Pro HD will allow the viewer, tech or not, to become completely immersed in the environment.  It's almost as if you're sitting on the tarmac with the crew from the comfort of your livingroom.

The DVD makes a perfect gift for dad whether or not he's got an HD television (It comes in NTSC-DVD as well). The HD DVD has 3 additional HD 1080p special features - in addition to the regular special features.

Abbott and Costello, Amelia Earhart, Lorenzo Lamas, Marilyn Monroe and Sydney Pollack are all just the beginning of a beautiful friendship.  Flyer or not, the film will make you appreciate the importance of general aviation, community, and history.

You can purchase the documentary "One Six Right" DVD from any of several outlets (both retail and online) found on the film's website: http://www.onesixright.com.   There is also a companion DVD "One Six Left" with almost an hour of additional footage.
